In fact I used to use empty (i.e., "00" in hex) escape char for some time with 3.8.20 and met no problem at all. All my frequently used scripts are compliant with the standard-compatible non-standard config with no escape char. Now, I updated it by the usual trick of simply clicking "OK" in "Setup -> Advanced setup" window and I got still sort of empty (in this case "01" in hex which is as designed in PP) escape char and no problem either. I recommend the usual trick too in your case: Before starting PP v.3.8.20, start pproconf.exe first, and go to the "Characters" tab and check or write down if needed "\" in the escape char box (with which I have no problem either) and press "OK" and "OK".
