If you don't get a startup chime then it's almost IMHO a hardware
problem.  Try plugging and unplugging something into the speaker jack
on the back - try listening with headphones to see if your hear
anything coming from the speaker jack.  If you hear it from the
speaker jack and not the speakers when unplugged it means the speaker
jack is probably bad/stuck.
