Had the same problem with my 5300 and a couple of IIci's as well after an OS re-install. Went to the options--Mail and News Prefs--and checked "Use Internet Config." Set up Internet Config, signed on, signed off and went back to Options and unchecked "Use Internet Config." It's worked fine since then.
