While that is true if you have to open the card or AP and solder onto the board, note that many cards and APs come built with a socket for an external antenna - the Apple Airport base station has an antenna socket hidden in its guts, for example. And the Lucent/Agere cards, also sold as Enterasys, have an external antenna adapter on the card, under a little pop-out circle on the hood.
And while the legality of home-built antennas might be debatable, there are many manufacturers who will sell you a pre-assembled antenna.
