Thanks for the links. These are text files that open fine if dropped onto BBEdit. No solution to the password problem, though. I wouldn't even mind reformatting the disk and putting a fresh system on it before it goes in for the REA but even that doesn't appear possible. Oh well, I've told the friend he's getting a tattoo on Monday in an embarrassing place -- that way we'll always be able to find the password in the future :-)
The powerbook is definitely going in on Monday for the REA (mobo and plastics) and the 500MB hard drive will be upgraded to either a 1GB or a 6GB drive, both of which I have ready to go.
