PB 3400s are not G3s, so they cannot run beyond 9.1. It runs fine on mine w/ 144mb RAM.
I'm pretty sure a USB/PCMCIA card will work fine as well as a Firewire2Go card. After I got my 3400 I read a lot of info on whether the slot (top slot) was cardbus compliant.
