I would definitely upgrade the OS to at least 8.1.  You didn't mention how much ram is 
in the machine, so going higher than that depends on the amount of ram available.  I 
personally like 9.1, even if it does have a performance hit on an older cpu- I just 
have fewer problems with it.  I know others on the list like 8.6 with the 3400.
