For the Record:

In trying to get the Epson software installed on my PB3400 running OS8.6 I learned two things. Increasing Finder memory reduces some of my crash time, and I was introduced to ResEdit.

Also, I might add, Epson support is very good, though not overtly Mac savy.

In the end, I downloaded the necessary drivers, installed without the CD, and the printer is up and running. It was the path of least resistance. My concern about missed software offered on the CD proved unfounded.

For the archives record, I'm including the salient parts of various suggested solutions.

Thanks everyone,
Cliff

Strobel: External Monitor Hook-Up Solution

From: "Eric L. Strobel" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Oh, and there is no way to change the resolution since the screen is an LCD.
The best one can do on an LCD is to emulate this, but I don't believe you
ever emulate a *higher* resolution, just lower ones, appropriately
dithered/resampled on the fly by the video system to utilize your full
screen area.

So, basically, you're still screwed. The only thing I can think of is to
maybe hook up an external monitor of higher resolution and make that the
default screen??

Drew: ResEdit Solution

From: Andrew Kershaw <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: USB Epson Printer PB 3400 Installation

I have only vaguely followed this thread...

The problem's a dialog box that comes up off screen, right?

Can't you just ResEdit the installer and reset the X,Y coordinates of the dialog box? Usually these are "top" and "left" coordinates (Top-left of the screen being 0,0 and bottom-right being 800,600). The resources you want to find are usually of type "DLOG". Set the top coordinate to something like 45, left to something like 10 - that will put the dialog near the top left corner. You can be fancier if you like, or course, and place the window wherever you want it. It will take some playing around to find the right DLOG, though.

Peace,
Drew

This extension claims to let you drag any window of any kind.

The page here:

says it is for System 7.1 but it's worth a try, right?

John Smith: Disk Copy CD then ResEdit Solution

What if you use disk copy to make a copy of the CD onto your HD, then run
the resedit trick on that? After that, simply run it from the disk on your
HD.
