now for some reason it will not format any disk, and now i lost my document that i need for class tomorrow, sadly i don't have a really old version of word for windows, i only have office 2000.

Anyone have a favorite old workhorse model to recommend Billy look for? I'd go with HP deskwriter over imagewriter myself, but mostly just because of form factor- you can pile books and stuff on a deskwriter :) and my deskwriters have been workhorses.
Just make sure it's got the mac (round) printer port and you should be set. You can make the printer do a self-test even when not hooked to a computer.
