Your 1400 with the 333 MHz G3 is going to be faster than even a 3400/240; remember, a Kanga benchmarked at twice the speed of the fastest 3400. A raw CPU benchmark would probably place a 1400 with a G3-333 at slightly more than twice the power of the 3400/240.
Of course, in the real world, things can be different. A 3400 with its RAM maxed out can easily be run with virtual memory shut off, even under OS 9. You'd never get by with that on a 1400 unless you never do multitasking of any sort. What's more, VM on a 3400 is a lot faster than on a 1400 because it has a faster IDE controller. It also has a faster bus speed, a better graphics chip, better sound and can easily be modified for USB connectivity. In fact, the 3400's capabilities are quite remarkable for a machine introduced seven years ago. Against all those advantages, the 1400 has two things to fire back with--it can take a G3 processor upgrade, and it's lighter. Each machine has its selling points, which is why 1400s and 3400s sell for about the same price. When I needed something with some more "oomph" than my 5300, I opted for a 3400 and have been pleased with it. I think you would be, too, although I would recommend a Kanga even more if you can find one--it's a 3400 with a "G3 upgrade" already installed, and sometimes sells for little more than a 3400. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
