There is one issue to be aware of - the PB will save an enormous amount of electricity.

For example, a PB on 24 hrs uses about as much power as a desktop in 45 minutes.

While a PowerBook uses less power than a desktop it's not that little. Drawing from actual power measurements a 7500 uses 87 W while a G3 Kanga PowerBook draws 24 W. That's not counting the monitor on the 7500 but is including the display on the PB. Measurements are actual Watts, not VA. Laptop batteries were fully charged (thus the number doesn't include changing current).

That's a ratio of 3.6:1, not the 32:1 you quote.

Well . . .it does of course depend on what machines you compare and ***how you have your power management software set***.

I am only writing from personal experience, comparing a 3400/200 with a 4400/200 (15" tube screen) , and they are a good pair to compare because the design & spec is very similar.

We generate all our own electricty from solar panels, so we do have to measure this sort of thing quite carefully. (In fact we have a very expensive meter to do it all for us but thats another story)

Actual figures for our two machines are:

4400 with 15" apple display and ethernet card = 204W
3400 asleep = <1 W
3400 awake = about 16W (varies a bit)
3400 with cd in drive = about 21W (even if not spun up!)

Over the day, the way we use the 3400, it does in total spend a large part of the day asleep , and the figures really are as stated.

I didn't want to argue over decimal places though. Of course other people may use their machines differently, but I think point is still one that many people may not have thought of.
