I'm running 8.1. Like I said, I do have the iOmega extension installed,
and have no problems running an external zipdrive.

Howard,
try removing the drivers for the external zip drive. My set up was similar to yours, I had an external SCSI zip drive (for a 1400 pb) and the VST internal zip drive would not work at first. I removed the external zip drivers and installed the generic ones from the iomega site and everything's been fine since.
