I used to read DOS floppies all the time in System 7, 8 & 9 on various computers. As long as you have a high density disk drive and the proper software installed it works perfectly. I've never tried double density since I could never get them to work in PC floppy drives. Getting MacOS to recognize the files is another thing, but then I was usually transferring text and Stuffit files. I don't recall what software needs to be installed to get it to work. I do recall it's been available in the installer since at least system 7.5. I have heard of software to allow windows to read Mac floppies, but I'm a Unix guy and only use windows for my TV tuner card.
