The Apple logo on the G3 was designed to show the logo so that it
could be correctly seen as being correct when the lid was closed.
On the G4, it was reversed so that others could see that, when in
use, you were using a Mac.
Note that the inversion of the logo was more or less at the same time
as the logo backlighting. Which makes sense, if you are going to
light it, it should be "right side up" when lit.
Rumor has it that some TV show or movie rigged a Mac to illuminate
the backlight and when someone at Apple saw it they decided it would
be a good idea to do it for all of them.
