Just formatting it won't make it work on the mac--you need to run
DriveSetup to get it to be usable as a device, especially if you want to
boot from it. (I'm using a 256meg unit in my 5300c as a startup
device--I'll go to 1 gig soon as I see a rebate on a CF--those things can
be costly! :) )

Re: using it in your camera again, there's some "master header"
blocks--forget what they're called--that got wiped when you formatted the CF on the Mac. Put the CF into a PC if one is available and do a device
format there--it should work again in your camera.

Actually I did use Drive Setup and initialized it as a Mac Standard Volume. I installed OS 8.6 on it and booted up successfully from it -- the HD was unplugged -- and it ran silent as snowfall, lovely!

But as I said, I installed a few more extensions into its system folder and after that it was a no go. Couldn't even boot the 1400 from a boot CD while the CF card was aboard. Just froze up the system until I removed it altogether. It's now unrecognized by two laptops and one iMac.

I will take your advice and seek out a PC, for, as you say, these 1GB cards are pricey -- even though I did swing a Circuit City rebate a few months ago!

Thanks for your help.
