Whew! Okay, the Monkey Puzzle is solved. My 5300's PRAM is zapped and the desktop rebuilt. :-)
In addition to making certain the caps-lock was off, I also opened up the Key Caps desk accessory and checked in there -- turns out I actually had a sticky (though still functional) Option key. Even though the keyboard LOOKS clean and there are no other problems, I'm gonna break out the KeyboardKleen.
