Bit of an urban myth that, IIRC

My understanding is that the 5300 was planned to be released with Li-on
batteries but a couple of the prototype batteries overheated due to
manufacturing problems with the batteries. The 5300 was therefore released
with Ni-Mh batts instead.

The 5300 REP was due to power connector and bad plastics problems.

Thank you for the sanity, Malcolm!

The 5300 never had any flaming problems. It was SONY Li-Ion batteries that had a problem during recharging that could cause them to over heat, melt, or worse, though thankfully this was discovered in production and not in the field. Some 5300s with Li-Ions did escape Apple's factories, but AFAIK all were successfully recalled and replaced with NiMH versions.

Peace,
Drew
