I can't offer you a solution, but I can sympathize. I got a Duo 280 and
it has the same affliction: putting the battery in the computer turns it
off like that. I also have no clue why this is and I certainly don't
have spare Duos or Duo batteries lying around with which to check.
(though I imagine it would be cheaper to acquire the Duo than a working
Duo battery...)

I knew that the battery was far from holding a charge, but I wanted to
test how long it actually took (In case I was ever in need of a
desperate fax or a similar case). I put the battery in with the A/C
adapter connected, and it registered on a few various battery
monitoring apps. No more than 5 seconds later, the PB just cold shut
off, like when you pull the plug on one without a battery. I removed
the battery and attempted to power on again, and it shows the Happy
Mac for .5 second, then the floppy disk with the flashing <?>, and
then finally a Sad Mac with the code
0000000F
0000000D
Of course, I have no DuoDock, floppy drive, or any other means to get
the thing booted off of anything else but the HD.
Any suggestions?
