I can't offer you a solution, but I can sympathize. I got a Duo 280
and it has the same affliction: putting the battery in the computer
turns it off like that. I also have no clue why this is and I
certainly don't have spare Duos or Duo batteries lying around with
which to check. (though I imagine it would be cheaper to acquire the
Duo than a working Duo battery...)

If the Duo shuts off when you put the battery in, this means the
battery is evil-dead; in such bad shape, it knocks the duo out. You
might be able to whip the battery into shape using a Lind
Supercharger, but there is no guarantee.
