Howdy,

I recently ended up with a PTP225 with 128MB of RAM, a cute little white Zip drive, and a dead HD. I popped an old 5400rpm 2gig unit in to see what she had. Turns out she also has a g3/500 card, by Newer, inside. This, and all those slots got me to thinking about upgrading it to make, say a backup system, or a platform for OS9 so I won't have to use Classic on my G4 anymore.

Does anyone know if the g3/500, coupled with the bus (40-50mhz?), makes for a machine capable of basic DV editing? I would think that there would be plenty of bandwidth, but I just want to be sure. I'd probably run Premiere 6 and iMovie 2 on it.

Also, has anyone tried one of those ATA cards. like from Sonnett, that apparently let you boot off of attached ATA drives? I'm thinking that would be the most cost-effective option, versus a bigger SCSI unit...

And finally, any recommendations for RAM, firewire, USB, and graphics cards? Is there anything better for this old box than the Radeon 7000?

Is it fast enough to put a DVD-ROM drive in so as to watch movies?

I'm mostly just looking for ideas, as the machine is really only used for doing some Office 2001 stuff and Civ II right now. It's funny, I used to want one of these pretty badly in 1997, but now I don't really know what to do with it!

Thanks,

Alex
