Hello,
I have not had much success getting different distros working on older macs. Off course, I have been trying with old quadras and 6100s. Less support there. YDL does look like the best for 'current' machines, but check their website for compatibility issues you may have with your particular machine. They should also list a 'suggested size' for hard drive partitions. My guess is that you should at least look for a 4gig. ebay is usually the cheapest for used. www.pricewatch.com or www.shopper.com if you want new.

Some newbie questions from a recent discoverer of the Power list:

1) Would YDL be a good choice, or would another distro be better?

2) Would the 1.2 GB HD on the PowerBase be sufficiently large enough to handle MacOS and Linux? If I'd need a bigger drive, can anyone recommend where to look for one?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I can't comment on the Linux issue wrt the PCI powermacs, although I can say it runs great on a Pegasos I or II ;-) But as far as the hard drive goes, its hard to find a sub-20gig drive anymore, and 40 giggers can usually be had for $40-50, so why not just go for a new, fast IDE drive? Even if by some bizarre hardware flaw you could only use the first 8 gigs of it, it would still be cheaper in the end, and more reliable than buying a used drive small enough to get around this.

Which brings up another question, can these computer's IDE ports deal with big drives? Lots of PeeCees of that era couldn't handle a drive of over 8 gigs at least on bootup, was this an x86-only foible?
