What I want to do now is to select parts of text in a controlled way. But "select" doesn't seem to be able to use with PowerMail even as it is in the dictionary, not even with UI scripting as PowerMail doesn't seem to hand out references to editable fields in the GUI, which of course was the main reason for trying it this way. Actually whenever I try and use select I get "item [whatever] doesn't understand the select message" or it just doesn't happen. Maybe "select" does something else completely? It's also not possible to reach anything via "current selection".
