Having emptied the mail trash I compacted the index. The index.data file came down from 18 mb to 7 mb. I also allocated 35 mb to PM. I then repeated the search performed earlier today. The results pane opened within a very few seconds. Thanks for the tip. Does this mean that the mail index needs to be compacted regularly? How often? -- Charles
