Mark,

Palo Verde disposes smoke detectors as either radioactive material or they are
sent back to the manufacturer.

FYI, in March of this year there was a thread on Powernet titled: Programs to
manage Generally Licensed Devices. The question then was: Does anyone have a
procedure or document that defines a program to manage the procurement, use and
disposal of items manufactured in accordance with 10CFR31.5? Devices that come
to mind include smoke detectors, explosive detectors and tritium exit signs.

You may want to also go to the archives and see if there is some useful
information there.

Seth.

What does your utility do or how do you handle industrial smoke detectors (as a
whole) that have no detectable loose surface or fixed contamination (that
originates from the utility)?

Return to manufacturer? Dispose through waste processing vendor? Handled in
some other manner?
