Fermi 2 also uses a "similated filter" alpha calibration source so that no
further correction factor need be applied. It has a 0.5 mg/cm2 mylar covering
which supposedly simulates 20% self-absorption. Of course it's going to matter
which type of air sample filter is used: PTFE filters are much less "fuzzy" and
thus would be expected to have lower self-absorption.

North Anna does not use a correction factor for attenuation/transmission/self
absorption factor for alpha analysis for particulate air samples. Our
calibration sources are made utilizing the same air sampling media patches.
This eliminates the use of a separate correction factor since this is built
into our instrument’s efficiency (G-5020 and iSolo) during calibration.

We do have correction factors for liquid samples counted for alpha.

Diablo Canyon wants to know ..
What (if any) attenuation / transmission / self absorption factor is used for
alpha analysis of particulate air samples?

Any input will be appreciated!
