Palo Verde provides the following response:

Provided that the work area is not too hot, too contaminated, or the job
duration isn't too long, we typically use face shields (disposal or regular) to
minimize / prevent facial contaminations and for the most part workers are
generally receptive to wearing these. However, under other circumstance such
as heat stress, high contamination levels or location of contamination such as
inside S/Gs, under the Rx Head, under the Pressurizer during heater removal,
we will often times use the caveat in Regulatory Guide 8.15 that allows a
licensee to make a professional decision to utilize respiratory protection
devices for reasons that are not quantifiable provided that we document the
justification such as possible negative post-job impacts, facial
contaminations, external skin doses, long-term portal monitor alarms related to
probable intakes, and difficulty of alpha * bioassay analysis, etc. In these
instances we use of respiratory protection devices such as bubble hoods, PAPRs,
filter or air supplied respirators, etc. These devices are NIOSH approved.

We use the TEDE ALARA Review process to document these decisions.

Subject: Powernet: Facial protection from contamination

I was wondering what type of protection other utilities use as facial PC to
protect the worker from facial contamination.

Also could you furnish the Type and how receptive the workers are to it.

Lastly if it is NIOSH approved equipment or not.

Thanks for any information furnished.
