Mr. Miller,

Thanks for this very helpful information. I am not sure how we missed the OE
on the Elmer's glue but sounds like we need to look harder at UT gel. Happy
Thanksgiving to you!

Jerry,

Elmer’s glue was determined to wad up into little balls in the reactor. GE
wrote a SIL about 20 years ago about this occurring and potential for crud
induced fuel failures. It was a Dresden HP that identified the issue and
worked with GE on the SIL. While I was in the BWR world we change from Elmer’s
glue to UT Gel. Quad Cities first switched to UT Gel in ’90 and Dresden
followed in ‘92. Engineering uses the gel for their UTs and, if most of the
residual gel is removed, there are no issues associated with its use.

I have been at Braidwood for the last 9 years and use UT gel extensively
throughout the station. We have no issues associated with UT gel. The gel is
diluted by using a 7:1 water to gel mixture. We put the gel/water mixture in
bug/garden sprayers for large applications and in small sprayers for localized
applications. When the diluted gel is dried it provides a thin shell. If not
properly diluted the gel will not harden and surfaces can become a bit slippery.

We do not use a fixative but have used a heavy blue matting that is typical for
heavy maintenance…..contact Kenny Young at CR3 for more information.

Subject: Powernet: Fixative for Permanent Cavity Seal Ring Installation

We would like to know what Fixatives other sites recommend for helping to
control contamination in the upper cavity around the reactor vessel during
preparation/installation of permanent cavity seal ring. We typically use a
Elmer’s glue water mixture fixative for most applications, but there are
concerns that this may be to “gummy” to put on the floor with work being
performed on the surfaces. We are going to mock up whatever we plan to use so
we will have the opportunity to test.

Thanks in advance for your help, and Happy Thanksgiving!
