Diablo Canyon offers the following response:

Our "Control of Radiography" procedure states the following:

Radiation protection shall ensure the following prior to the initial
radiography activity:
5.4.1 The radiographer has a radiation survey instrument that has been response
checked on each scale within 24 hours prior to use.T34818
5.4.2 The radiographer has a TLD and personal electronic dosimeter (PED).T34818

Diablo Canyon has OE involving an overexposure of two radiographers in 1991.
The radiographer received 15.4 Rem calculated to the whole body. The helper
received 3.2 Rem by TLD. The radiographers had "source checked" their
instrument that shift but it was not responsive to radiation as found after the
event. There were a number of other issues contributing to the event. See
INPO OE 4839.

Linda

Subject: Powernet: Implementation of EPRI RP Radiography controls.

In the Electric Power Research Institutes (EPRI) technical document,
"Nondestructive Evaluation: Recommended Practices for Maintaining Radiation
Safety of Radiographic Operations at a Nuclear Plant", dated December 2010, it
is noted in attachment B section 4.5.7 as part of the example RP Check-off
list, it eludes to the action that; RP will perform an operational check on all
scales/ranges of the radiographer(s) survey instruments.

PVNGS would like to know:
1. Does your site perform this check of a vendor Radiographers instruments
or something different in the regards of ensuring the radiographers instrument
functions properly?

2. If so perform this operational check, what criteria do you use to do
this?

3. If you do something different from above check, what actions do you
take?

Thanks
