The activity for each extinguisher is about 1.8 microcuries. Probably no reasonable way for licensed material to enter the pressure vessel. I would think you could release them by direct frisk. Is there any reasonable way that a fire extinguisher can become internally contaminated with licensed material? Typical fire extinguishers are under slight positive pressure even when discharged; I think that it is unreasonable to do anything more than direct and indirect surveys of the external surfaces. You may have to revise the material release procedure to specifically exempt fire extinguishers to answer any concerns, which might have been expressed. BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT CLICKING LINKS OR OPENING ATTACHMENTS FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES. DO NOT PROVIDE PERSONAL INFORMATION SUCH AS SS#, USER ID/PASSWORD, ETC.** Comanche Peak is currently considering how to release fire extinguishers that contain Potassium Bicarbonate from the RCA. The extinguisher does not fit in our usual HPGe setup, so we have run some preliminary scans of an extinguisher on a WBC using NaI detection. Obviously the Potassium-40 peaked as the known contaminant and various unknown peaks populated as well (possible scatter). Does anyone have experience to share or suggestions on releasing extinguishers or other objects that do not fit in a HPGe?
