*Obama calls for urgent G20 action on economic crisis*

*London*, April 1, IRNA – *US President Barack Obama* Wednesday urged the
world’s richest nations to urgently work together to tackle the economic
downturn and forget their occasional differences.

Speaking on the eve of the G20 summit in London, the US president warned
that if countries “turn away from each other” they could risk a repeat of
the Great Depression which followed the Wall Street crash of 1929.

“We must not miss an opportunity to address a crisis that knows no
boundaries, we have a responsibility to co-ordinate our action and find our
common ground, not our occasional differences,” he said in calling for
urgent action at a joint news conference with *British Prime Minister Gordon
Brown*.

Obama said that he was aware that the G20 nations were “appropriately
pursuing their own approach and we’re not going to agree on every point. “

He said he came to London on his first overseas visit to put forward ideas
but insisted that he “also came to listen, not to lecture.”

All of the Group of 20 states, which account for 85 per cent of the world
economy, had a responsibility to tackle the crisis with a sense of urgency,
“the US does not intend to act alone,” he said.

His comments come amid reported divisions among the leaders of the
wealthiest countries on further measures to stimulate the economy.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned in a radio interview that current
proposals for a regulatory overhaul to help prevent crises in future
“satisfy neither Germany nor France.”

Sarkozy was due to hold a press conference in London with German Chancellor
Angela Merkel later Wednesday to spell out their demands for tougher
regulation of financial companies and tax havens, with both determined to
shift the emphasis away from further fiscal stimulus efforts.

Thousands of demonstrators were also mounting a series of protests to ensure
that the G20 tackle reforms to the financial capitalist system and do not
neglect the 172 countries not represented at the summit, including the
world’s most impoverished nations.
Brown insisted that the world leaders arriving in London were “within a few
hours of agreeing a global plan for economic recovery and reform," but both
he and Obama declined to give a timeframe for how long the economic crisis
would last, saying recovery would depend on how swiftly countries took
action.

“The option of doing nothing is not available to us,” the British premier
warned. “We have seen from past crises that if people fail to take decisive
action at the beginning, then you risk a longer recession,” he said, while
playing down suggestions that Sarkozy might walk out of the summit.
