maxcpus didn't do the trick (don't know why), but I found a way of "hot-plugging" CPUs: echo 0 >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/online will take cpuX off-line. Running 3 threads of "small FFT test" works fine, nothing unusual to report. Running 3 threads of "large FFT test" makes the system hang after a couple of minutes.
