And you were both spot on.  The compound that I'd applied in 5 places
had barely spread at all.  In fact, there were major air pockets to be
seen.  I've cleaned it all up, applied a very thin, even layer of
compound, and re-seated the whole thing. 
On the first test, the CPU temp rose quite a bit slower, and so far it's
only reached 61C.  The heatsink itself is still not too hot to touch.
