The Foomatic DB at linuxprinting.org claims that it works perfectly with 
foomatic, but the PPD isn't on the site.  I am curious about the PPD you 
used and how you are connected to it (I assume USB based on your 
comments below)  The fact that the light flashes would mean that you are 
generating some output for the printer and sending it, but it may not be 
in a format that the printer understands and/or the printer may require 
a mode of communication that LP doesn't support.  You might try 
communicating to it over  the network and see if that clears up your 
problem.  You also might try a different PPD file using a different 
driver.  That being said, if it works under CUPS for you, I would use 
it.  Barring some unforseen event, we will be including a copy of CUPS 
on Solaris in a few weeks.  At that time, you will have the opportunity 
to choose either LP or CUPS as the "active" print service.  (See
