I work in IT for a fine arts college that handles a great deal of customized and otherwise non-standerd printing. We’ve found that depending on which printer you’re using (Epson and Xerox for us), Apple’s ‘Mange Custom Sizes’ print settings return bizarre printable-area dimensions, which if printed could waste a good deal of paper. Since we charge for printing, our clientele are concerned about avoiding wasted resources, and we’re curious as to how we can lock down these settings (either per printer or via Mac OS X). Details:
The issue is specific to the Mac OS as opposed to any particular application, in that from both Apple’s Preview and Adobe Photoshop you can drill down to Paper Size / Manage Custom Sizes / hit '+’ (then name the custom paper size). Here’s what happens: - When creating a custom page size, the paper size defaults to whatever you printed to last (for example = 8.5'' X 11'') - The Non-Printable Area will be listed as 'User Defined', and you can now choose your own 4 boarder values (2'', 4'', ect.) - Alternatively, you can then change the 'Non-Printable Area' from 'User Defined' to something else (which allows you to change from one printer to another). Sometimes these values make sense (8.5’’ X 16’’) and sometimes they do not (126’’ X 1968.51’’). - Sizes are consistent printer-to-printer, meaning that if you change ’Non-Printable Area' back to 'User Defined', the paper size changes back to a ’normal' default (in this case, 8.5'' X 11'’). Obviously the concern is someone accidentally attempting to print a 1968.51’’ document. Here’s how our printing is setup: We’re connecting via SMB to a Windows 2012 print server. This server is also a PaperCut Secondary Server. Then the print server is sending jobs in the following two ways: 1. Via PaperCut TCP/IP ports to Xerox printers (Phaser 7100, ColorQube 9201, Phaser 5550) 2. Via LP ports to EFI Fiery XF servers, which renders jobs and send them to Epson Stylus Pro 7900 printers I’m not sure if Mac OS stores these ‘default’ page-dimension values, or if not how to change them per-printer. My efforts to research the issue have returned no mention of anyone else experiencing this, and we’ve been able to reproduce the problem across multiple machines and printers in lab and non-lab environments. Has anyone run into this before, either in Yosemite or in a previous version of OS X? Any recommendations or troubleshooting steps would be welcomed - thank you!
