Looks like Nikon have no intention of bringing out a full frame CCD like
Canon, as this new digital 12-24mm DX lens they've bought out seems to
indicate that they are going to stay with the present D-SLR format.
I dont think Nikon is just going to stay with the current chip size, they must be developing a full frame 11+mp body. The new DX lenses are a great addition for users that dont really need the full frame type and are quite happy with the 1.5x focal lenght extension. I am guessing Nikon has found out that this chip size suits many Press photographers well and wanted to give them both a real wide angle and an indication that there will be more D-SLR based on the same chip size. For many its nice to be able to leave the heavy 300mm at home and use the 80-200mm instead. And smaller sensors should deliver less noise - another reason for staying with the size for the Press guys. They dont need 11-14mp, its way to much info and the process time and write time is way to slow (and the camers cost almost 2x as much). They need 6mp at the most and as fast camera as possible both regarding ISO and write speed/buffer. So I feel Nikon is simply saying that they intend to keep this physical sensor size for some time in relation with their press camera bodies, currently the D1h. I seroiusly doubt that they do not have a full frame lined up - unless they are simply working on something completely different like a Foveon X3 based camera - but somehow Foveon doesnt seem ready for that yet...

Why don't they stick a 11mp Dalsa chip in a D1X - now that would be
something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The highest ISO for the Dalsa that I have seen is ISO 100 - on the Leaf Valeo 11 ist either ISO 25 or 50. Must be hard to pump it up without getting a lot more noise. I guess this would be a reason that both the new Canon and Kodak use CMOS sensors?

Best
