apple alt shift and delete (as well as del if you like) on start up
forces the system to look to a startup folder 'other' than the one it
would normally look for

if for some reason your system is corrupted and looking for a boot off
the 'moon' then doing this could encourage it to get real and actually
try a local sys folder

consecutive interrupted start ups using these keys causes it to cycle
through the range of possible system folders available on disks

On one machine hereabouts- this is the only reliable way of getting it
to boot OS9 and then go back to OSX - using the startup disk control
pannel gets the system irrevocably stuck in one or the other system and
unable to boot from a cd ( in many instances) 

...oh the wonders of scsi drivers
