Lovely, 16 bit gives plenty of leaway for 'justments, 32 bit would be even
nicer! (what would that be 15+ stops tonal range?), all with the right kind
of low noise sensors.

Don't you think Ansel Adam would have loved digital capture and colour
management?, its like the zone system with knobs on. He would have been the
guy with the large format digital back, sitting there and getting 20 stops
tonal range by making multiple exposures from inside a cave looking out at
full sunshine..

I think 8 bit will still be mainstream for ever though, its the same kind of
cost/benefit water level that sees most of us using 35mm format cameras
rather than 5x4 or 10x8. Well actually I could imagine photographers going
the 16 bit route, it would come to a juddering halt as soon as it hit a
printers imagesetter though.

Perhaps thats where larger bit depth belongs in pre (re)productoion.
