Just heard today that Philips/Dalsa are going to produce a 21Mp ccd chip available to manufacturers by the end of the year. No word on physical size, but this may make the 20Mp barrier more achievable - if not a little more expensive.
Story may have a slight vapor trail, heard on another forum. Source is generally reliable.

Consider that both parties have valid points to make.
If you are waiting for quality and don't want to be technically left behind: sure buy an affordable ppi-duster. Many of them suit certain levels of photographic requirements just fine. By the time it comes to upgrade you'll know why and what you want.
If you don't want to take any chances with new emerging technology, and quality you know and can predict is vital, then live within the proven parameters of the field. Film and drums still do things DCS cannot. Just as DCS can do several the other...etc, etc.
I simply believe to contest one as better than the other is to eliminate the more important elements: the photo itself and the person pushing the button. I pack both and use each to best suit their own purpose.
I imagine the true value is knowing when to use one or the other or both...
