[PRODIG] DVD formats

Can anyone help with the differences between the various data DVD formats?

I have a DVD drive in a PC that will only write to 'DVD+R' format, but the Macs can't read them.

Is there a work-around, or did I just buy the wrong sort of DVD writer?
