> Mike Shiel,s tale has prompted me to start checking our own CD archive ! > Will DVDs be any better I wonder
As posted previously, I am using DVR-R and DVD-RW for one of my archive strategies (a grand name for my little boxes of disks). I understand that the forecast longevity of a DVD-R is ~100 years - I have no horror stories yet (2 years of DVD experience so far). However there are still "format wars" going on, so compatibility issues could still be the killer once we look more than 5 years forwards. To date I have not had a compatibility issues with a written DVD-R. We have circa 10 different PC DVD drives in use. DVD-RW appears OK too. Of course once you start writing DVD's for use on "set-top" DVD players it is a whole different ball game! On the storage front (CD and DVD) I use CDProjectz bubblesleeve system (www.cdprojects.com) and can recommend them wholeheartedly. I use the steel cased version for the extra robustness it gives - plus I got a whole lot of them cheap at a clearance sale in the US.....
