I receive quite a lot of traffic at my web site, but one thing I really hate
is when somebody decides to use my images in a chat room and links directly
through my web site
Ashley,
If you are running on a Unix host, with the Apache web server, you might be able to do something with a server redirect, so that all requests for images that don't come from the website itself are served with a broken link.
See the articles at
<http://www.bignosebird.com/apache/a13.shtml> <http://www.st-minutiae.com/misc/bandwidth.shtml>
for more details.
The second article is particularly good, as it shows how to replace the image being requested with something else. For instance, replace the image this guy steals with a image that says (in Spanish) "I've been stealing this image from www.yourwebsite.com; I'm a jerk." That should stop him fairly quickly:)
