We have just had to do something very similar, mind numbingly boring.

Eventually we used the Rename feature in PhotoMechanic Lite
http://www.camerabits.com/

Select the files you wish to rename, Go to file Rename (Apple M) and select
the PreText Name and Suffix option

In the Pre Text 'window' type the text you wish to put in front of the
existing file name. It will keep the existing file name if you then type
within Curly Quotes {fbas} which is the code for the file name.

PhotoMechanic can place lots of different info automatically either in the
Filename or any editable field of the ITPC caption from the EXIF info or the
filename.

PhotoMechanic has a long list of what it will automatically do, called
'Variables' and if the above doesn't do what you are after, then there are
many other options listed in the 'Variables' folder.
