Perhaps, but calibrating the monitor to a similar white point and gamma as
the working space minimizes differences between viewing an image in a
program that doesn't recognizes profiles and ones that do.

So that I can try assigning different profiles to an untagged file (digital
capture) to find which one looks best.

I agree.  IOW, toggling between Monitor Compensation On/Off in PS 5.x, when
a monitor setting and working space are set the same (D50/1.8), wouldn't the
difference in view be directly related to how accurate the monitor's
calibration is?
