Is this not a job for those clever people who back their hard drives up using retrospect or some such. I have just installed "silverkeeper" some shareware software that came with my lacie HDD. It has an option called "restore" on it which I guess means that it allows you copy your back copy of you system folder, complete with preferences etc on to your new HDD.
