[PRODIG] Pocketdrive -firewire probs

I've got a dead firewire port on my LaCie pocketdrive (funnily enough 
same on my LaCie CD burner) which means I can't daisy chain my firewire 
card reader to my laptop (which never has enough disc space left) . 
This makes downloading/ archiving digipix a pain on location. Is this a 
hardware or software problem? (G4 Ti 500mhz, OS10.2.6)
