I've been down this road so I know the difficulty with this combination. The
problem is that a) the iBook doesn't have an IR port and b) you want to use
OS 9. I think that your only option here is one of the proprietary cable
solutions - the Applestore used to stock the Palladio cable (I think that
was what it was called) which was able to link a number of Nokia, Ericsson
and Motorola phones to the USB port of an OS 9 Mac.

If you are willing to use OS X (which is what I ended up doing) then your
options are increased quite significantly. You can either go Bluetooth - you
will need a small USB adaptor for about 30 quid and a compatible phone (a
few Nokia models but almost all the SonyEricsson phones) - or you can get an
IR-USB adaptor. With this you can use virtually any IR capable data phone
(e.g. almost all recent Nokias including the 8310 you mention). Belkin make
such a thing and I managed to find one in my local PC World for about 50
quid (though I think the Applestore now sell them a bit cheaper). It's boxed
as a PC only product but it works perfectly with OS 10.2.6 (the drivers are
already built into the OS).
