Dear Slater

You could say I know several people who have.

I know a scanning bureau who do a lot of scans for libraries. They have developed a 55Mb and a 72Mb "standard" which I use myself. I know another stock photographer who has also used the same drum scan standard from the same supplier. His view is quite clear. The 1ds is good enough while his D60 is not. That is from conversations within the last week.

I think it comes down to what sort of photography you do and what the market competition is. Would you enter a Formula One race with a mini?

What has put me off digital capture until now have been the sales of medium format images to calendar companies and the like. Some of those sales would not have happened on 35mm. I am now looking at the 1ds with more interest which will be expensive as I have no Canon lenses.

Yours

Bob

The real test which some libraries and their technical advisers are
doing is this. Take a 645 Velvia tranny shot with a prime lens at a
subject full of detail using a stable tripod with mirror lock. Make a
72mm drum scan. Now compare. It is against this yardstick that the 1ds
is being judged.

Have you done this? Or do you know the results from someone who has?
