1.On my Mac I can switch between different monitor profiles on the fly but
on my W2k machine I have to restart to change them. Is this the case with
XP?

Dear William

At the risk of over posting perhaps I can make some suggestions! I have not been aware of a problem in this regard on Win2K...I presume you are doing this from display properties?

2.The device calibrates the screen to a standard (in theory) but ambient
light conditions obviously affect the way images look on screen. Is there a
standard for ambient lighting? I have visited digital suites with lighting
that varies from pitch black to well lit with daylight balanced
fluorescents. Digital images that look fine on screen in a dark photo studio
can look too dark on screen in the designers office even if both screens are
properly calibrated.

I think you will find that setting your calibrator to .30 and around the 85 mark will be fine with an ambient lighting of about 28lux, though no doubt someone will disagree with me...I have an idea that Thomas Holm likes to go down from .3 to .2

3.Having calibrated a screen how can I tell if it is right? My Mac and PC screens are side by side and they both look good but they don't quite match so at least one of them must be wrong (but they both look better than before when I did them with Adobe Gamma).

Ask Neil Barstow or Thomas Holm for one of their verification prints...comes with a file for a visual assessment plus instructions. Using a good calibrator has got to be better than Adobe Gamma, but have you totally removed AG from your Win2K box and is everything set right on the Mac? Macs calibrate to match the Win2K boxes without any difficulty.

4.My PC screen is a Mitsubishi Diamond pro 930. After calibrating it has a slightly pink look in the neutral greys.

That's a shame...perhaps something slashing profile wise?

Cheers

Richard
