IMHO, I would steer very clear of auto-levels. I'm not even sure why there
is such a feature as it will always destroy any image it is used on!

If the change in contrast and exposure you mention occurs after using
auto-levels, it won't be anything to do with your screen, simply the effects
of auto-levels.
If, however, all images you open up appear to be contrasty and underexposed
regardless of source and before you do anything to them, then perhaps your
screen is not set up correctly...
