I'd recommend a Canon G2, I know the G3 and G5 are out but they don't
seem to have received as favourable a review as the G2 generally. I've
used one with a lensmate adaptor and mounted additional filters onto it
with little difficulty. It would be fine for what you want. I actually
visited the Galapagos with a 300/2.8 and spent most of my time shooting
with an 80-200/2.8. I also got a number of shots with a fish eye and
17-35/2.8 - you really can get close. I've used the G2 a fair bit, it's
a bit sluggish to boot and its not great if you're looking to capture
action but otherwise, it's a good little camera.

The G2 will be considerably cheaper than later models but there has been
talk of optical aberration on the G5, the G3 offers little advantage
over the G2 IMHO. Check out dpreview for more information but for some
user opinions, just query the model in the forum archive.
